A Warm Welcome

From the moment I stepped into "Stoa tou Dimitri," I was greeted with warmth and friendliness, reflecting the famed Cypriot hospitality. The restaurant's name, translating to "Dimitri's Arcade," hints at its historic roots, and indeed, the venue is tucked away in a beautifully preserved stone building. The rustic yet sophisticated décor immediately drew me in. The walls were adorned with traditional artefacts and vintage photographs, offering glimpses into the rich cultural heritage of Cyprus. A combination of soft, ambient lighting and the earthy tones of the stone and wood interiors created a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

The Ambiance

The restaurant features both indoor and outdoor covered seating, each with its own unique charm. I opted for a table in the centre of the restaurant. The place exuded an idyllic Mediterranean vibe, complete with the faint hum of conversation, the scent of fresh herbs wafting from the kitchen.

Culinary Adventure

The menu at "Stoa tou Dimitri" is a testament to the rich culinary traditions of Cyprus. It offers a curetted selection of dishes, blending local ingredients with age-old recipes. The staff, knowledgeable and passionate about their cuisine, helped guide me through the menu, suggesting specialties that best showcased the essence of Cypriot cooking.

Myself and my friends decided to have the traditional Cypriot “Meze” We began with an array of traditional appetizers, known locally as dips that are part of meze. This assortment included homemade tzatziki (a refreshing yogurt and cucumber dip), tahini and loukaniko (Cypriot sausages infused with wine and spices), olives, sardines and a Cypriot Salad. Each dish was a revelation, bursting with fresh, robust flavours that transported me straight to the Cypriot countryside. We decited to have some wine with this delicious “Meze” and the waitress recommended a local wine “gryfos” from Vlasides winery. What followed next was all kinds of other small plates including halloumi grilled in pita bread, dolmades, stifado, Mushrooms and many other authentic Cypriot dishes and the list goes on with sheftalia, pork kebabs, pork fillets soak in wine and lamp chops.

Stifado

A Sweet Finale

No meal in Cyprus is complete without dessert, and "Stoa tou Dimitri" did not disappoint. I opted for a selection of Glyko tou koutaliou an authentic Cypriot sweet, I paired the dessert with a cup of Cypriot coffee, brewed traditionally in a small pot called a briki. The coffee, strong and aromatic, was the ideal counterpoint to the sweetness of the dessert.

The Service

The service at "Stoa tou Dimitri" was exemplary. The staff was attentive without being intrusive, always ready to provide recommendations or share the story behind a dish. Their genuine enthusiasm for sharing their culture and cuisine was infectious, adding a personal touch to the dining experience. At one point, the owner himself stopped by my table to chat, sharing anecdotes about the restaurant's history and his passion for preserving Cypriot culinary traditions.

Cultural Connection

What truly sets "Stoa tou Dimitri" apart is its ability to connect diners to the cultural heartbeat of Cyprus. This is more than just a restaurant; it’s a celebration of heritage. We left with a deeper appreciation for the Cypriot way of life, where meals are not just about sustenance but also about community, tradition, and storytelling.
