My Visit to Antoniades Winery in Mandria: A Wine Lover’s Delight
Last weekend, I embarked on a memorable wine-tasting adventure at Antoniades Winery in Mandria, Cyprus. Nestled in the heart of the Troodos Mountains, this family-owned estate has built a reputation for producing exceptional wines that reflect the region's rich viticultural heritage. The experience exceeded my expectations, blending wine education, scenic views, and exceptional hospitality.
Arrival and First Impressions
I arrived at the winery on a sunny afternoon, greeted by the breath-taking panorama of rolling vineyards and rugged mountain landscapes. The air smelled of earth and vines, setting the perfect mood for a day of wine exploration. The welcoming staff ushered me into the tasting room, a beautifully designed space featuring rustic wooden furniture and large windows offering panoramic views of the vineyards.
The Winery Tour
Before the tasting session, I joined a guided tour of the winery. Our guide, Maria, shared the fascinating history of the Antoniades family, whose passion for winemaking spans several generations. She explained how they cultivate indigenous grape varieties like Xynisteri and Maratheftiko, emphasizing sustainable farming practices.
We strolled through the production facility, where we witnessed some of the old equipment used to make the wine, dating back centuries. Maria encouraged us to taste a freshly picked grape. She explained the fermentation and aging processes inside the production facility while displaying the large stainless steel tanks and oak barrels used for aging. The meticulous craftsmanship behind every bottle became evident.
Wine Tasting Experience
After the tour, the real excitement began. The winery had prepared a tasting menu featuring six wines, ranging from crisp whites to robust reds. The first pour, a chilled Xynisteri, dazzled with its citrus aroma and crisp, refreshing taste. Its lively acidity paired beautifully with the Cypriot cheese selection alongside the wines.
Next, I sampled a rosé made from Maratheftiko grapes. Its delicate strawberry notes and light, fruity
finish made it an instant favourite. The sommelier described the winemaking process, emphasizing how minimal intervention preserves the grape's natural character.
The reds followed, starting with a rich Maratheftiko. Bold and aromatic, it boasted dark fruit flavours and a hint of spice. Its velvety tannins lingered on my palate, making it a perfect match for the cured meats and olives on the platter. The highlight came with the winery’s signature red blend, a full-bodied masterpiece featuring complex layers of blackberry, plum, and oak. Each sip felt like a sensory journey through the Cypriot terroir.
A Taste of Tradition
No visit to a Cypriot winery feels complete without tasting Commandaria, the island’s iconic sweet wine. Antoniades Winery’s version shone with notes of dried figs, raisins, and warm spices. Its luxurious texture and balanced sweetness provided a fitting conclusion to the tasting experience.
Throughout the session, the staff shared stories about the winemaking process, local traditions, and their connection to the land. Their passion and expertise added a deeper dimension to every glass.
Memorable Moments and Takeaways
As the sun began its descent, we left the winery but I couldn’t resist purchasing a few bottles to relive the experience back home. The winery's blend of warm hospitality, expert craftsmanship, and stunning natural beauty left an indelible impression.
Visiting Antoniades Winery offered much more than just wine tasting. It provided an immersive journey into Cypriot winemaking culture, where tradition and modern techniques coexist harmoniously. I departed with a newfound appreciation for the art of winemaking and the stories behind every bottle. If you ever find yourself in Cyprus, Antoniades Winery should be at the top of your must-visit list.
