The Cyprus Sunshine Cup is Back
The Cyprus Sunshine Cup 2024 is a prestigious cycling event that attracts top athletes from around the world. The competition features challenging courses set against the beautiful backdrop of Cyprus, providing a unique and exciting experience for both participants and spectators alike.
This year the race will start on Wednesday at 10.30 am on the 21st of February on from Ancient Amathus. The action at the Cyprus Sunshine Cup 2024, which takes place again after four years, is organized by the company TOTAL SPORTS MARKETING. The race is included in the international calendar of the International Cycling Union (UCI) and is under the auspices of the Cyprus Cycling Federation.
Cyprus an Ideal Cycling Destination
The event, which was a forerunner of the spread of cycling in Cyprus, laying the foundations for making Cyprus an ideal cycling destination (racing and tourist), is being held for the first time since 2019, attracting again big names of the global cycling world.
The new format of the event with the holding of three independent Cross – Country (XCO) competitions of Olympic type gives participants the opportunity to collect valuable points in their effort to secure their qualification for the Olympic Games "Paris 2024".
Points
Both the race in Ancient Amathus at the premiere of the Cyprus Sunshine Cup 2024, as well as the other two that will follow the weekend (Tochni and Afxentia) are in category "1" of the International Cycling Union (UCI), with each offering participants separate points in men and women of the elite category.
Specifically, the winner of each race adds 60 points to his account, the second 40, the third 30, the fourth 25 and the fifth 20. From then on, from sixth place to 15th the points are reduced by two (i.e. the sixth 18p., the seventh 16p. and so on, with the 15th getting one point). In addition, cash prizes are provided for the top ten to reach the finish line.
The Program
The starting signal in Ancient Amathus will be given first for the women's race at 10:30am, followed at 12:30am by the men's race. The track is 4.86km long and apart from the fact that, from a racing point of view, it is an impressive route, it also highlights the beauty of the area passing by the sea, while there is also the historical aspect as cyclists will cross the archaeological site.
The impressive track in Amathus was created and used for the first time in the Cyprus Sunshine Cup in 2009 and until 2019 was an integral part of the race. The organizing authority appeals to athletes and spectators to show the necessary respect to the venue.
The awards ceremony will take place at 2:30pm.
The continuation will take place on Saturday (24/2) at the same hours in Tochni at 10:00am for women, 12:00pm for men and awards at 2:00pm.
The third and final race under the name “Afxentia” will take place on Sunday, February 25 at the Mantra tou Kampiou course, in the Maheras Forest (Nicosia District). It is a course that has always been used in the event since 1997 when it started under the name “Afxentia”. The race on Sunday (25/2) will end at 13:00 for the Women Elite and Men Elite categories, while the Medal Ceremony will be held at 13:30. The race also counts towards the Cyprus Cup of Cyprus Cycling Federation.
